How Long Does Ground Turkey (Raw) Last?
Fridge
1-2 days
Freezer
3-4 months
Ground turkey's 1-2 day fridge window matches ground beef's for the same underlying reason — grinding distributes any surface bacteria throughout the meat rather than confining it to the exterior, which is also why ground turkey needs the same 165°F cooking target as ground beef despite being poultry rather than red meat. A sour smell, a sticky or tacky texture, or a gray color running throughout the package, rather than just the surface, are the real signs it's turned.
Ground turkey's pale pink-to-beige color already makes early spoilage harder to catch by sight than with ground beef's more visibly reddish tone, which is part of why this site leans on smell and texture checks more heavily for turkey than on color alone. Buying it as close as possible to when it'll be cooked, and keeping it in the coldest part of the fridge rather than a door shelf, both meaningfully protect that short window given how little margin ground turkey leaves for error compared to a whole cut. A package that's ballooned slightly or feels unusually soft through the plastic can be a sign it's been mishandled in transit or storage, worth a closer smell-and-texture check before cooking even if the printed date hasn't passed yet. Ground turkey that's been left out on a counter for more than about two hours, whether during meal prep or after an interrupted cooking session, should be treated with more caution than the printed date alone would suggest, since that window of room-temperature exposure lets bacteria multiply quickly regardless of how fresh the package was originally.
Storage times and safe temperatures are general guidance from USDA FoodKeeper, USDA FSIS, and FDA sources — they are not a guarantee of safety. When in doubt, throw it out. This is not a substitute for professional food-safety advice.
