Tenders share the 1-2 day fridge window of other raw chicken cuts, and because they're small and thin, changes in texture tend to show up faster than on a bulkier cut — a tender that's gone from firm to noticeably soft or slippery to the touch is past its window even if it doesn't smell obviously off yet.
A sour or ammonia-tinged odor is the clearest sign tenders have spoiled, and it's worth trusting that smell over appearance, since tenders are already pale and can look deceptively fine even once bacteria have started to grow. Because tenders are a higher-turnover cut often packaged specifically for quick weeknight meals, they typically carry a closer sell-by date than a whole chicken or larger roast would, so checking the printed date is a more useful habit here than with less time-sensitive cuts. As with any raw poultry, reaching 165°F internally during cooking is the actual safety threshold — freshness at the time of cooking affects quality, not whether that temperature requirement applies.
Because tenders are often bought specifically for a same-week meal like a quick stir-fry or a batch of homemade tenders, buying only what will realistically get used within that 1-2 day window avoids the common trap of a partially used package sitting forgotten toward the back of the fridge.
Rinsing raw tenders under the tap before refrigerating them is a common habit but not one food-safety guidance actually recommends, since rinsing does little to remove bacteria and mainly risks spreading it to the sink and surrounding counter.
